Post 11-11 Newsletter - Commander’s Corner

Commander’s Corner

Happy New Year to all of our members and their families.

As 2008 begins be ready for new changes to happen at our Post.

At our meeting Jan.8, we had special guests. Our District Leaders were here, and we were informed that Post 11-11 in 2007 went over and above our goal for memberships. What a nice finish for the year.

Let’s see if we can increase in 2008 even more.

Also at our meeting, District asked if they could combine with us on Feb. 3rd for the 4 Chaplains service memorial, as they have heard how well our Chaplin {Jim Belew} performs the service, and would like other members to see how to improve their Dedication.

I would like to welcome Mike Carriveau to our team of board members. Mike will take over Dan Grathendick’s duties on the Business Committee.

A big thanks goes out to John Baker for his support and hard work getting many things fixed and the floor cleaned and waxed, which makes a very big improvement to our back hall.

Most important, keep our service mem and women in your prayers.

Thanks Everyone,

Tom Wartella
Commander

Kathie’s Campsite

Hi all!

February is coming up and, of course, that means Valentines Day. The Ladies Auxiliary have a special party planned. Check out their flyer and look in the newsletter for information on the night to come eat, dance, sing and visit with friends. Get out your dancin’ shoes and we’ll see ya here! I haven’t been here that long, but I haven’t seen anyone not having fun at any event they put on!

February 3rd at 1:00, we’ll be having the Four Chaplains Ceremony. It’s a very moving ceremony reverting back to World War II. Everyone is invited to attend.

We have Bingo the 2nd & 4th Saturdays each month. A food item is offered, usually about $3.00. Friday is steak night and on the 4th Friday we offer steak or catfish. Annie & Rosie have surprise Tuesday night dinners for a mere $5.00. What a deal!

We had a good year last year. Thanks to the volunteers for our events and meals and to you all for participating at our Post. Here’s to an even better year ahead!

Till the next campfire,

Kathie

Auxiliary

Hello everyone!   I hope you all had a great New Year.  The Auxiliary is looking forward to a wonderful 2008, and, as usual, we’re starting things off with a bang.  I might suggest you get a nice cold drink, and sit down and relax.  You’ll be reading this article awhile.  There’s a lot to report!

First of all, I want to report on our charity donations through 2007.  We all know that the Auxiliary does a great job providing all kinds of assistance to our active military, veterans, and community - but when you actually sit down and do the math, it’s even more amazing. Take a look at all the good your Auxiliary did in just one year:

Auxiliary Donations, 2007

Read a Book Organization - $100.00

Brothers Development (building a ramp for a disabled child) - $800.00

Thanksgiving Baskets - $497.88

Fill the Mayflower for Thanksgiving (providing food for active military families) - $500.00

Christmas Stockings for low-income special needs school classrooms - $ 93.11

Angel Tree Gifts (providing Christmas presents to children whose parents are incarcerated) - $470.85

The “Danny Fund” (helping an active military Army soldier whose car was broken into) - $500.00

Donation to single mother who was to be evicted three days before Christmas - $200.00

Fisher House - $500.00

St. Joseph’s Veterans Home - $500.00

Family Tree Woman’s Shelter - $500.00

Sentinels of Freedom (organization builds and equips houses for disabled veterans) - $500.00

TOTAL CHARITY DONATIONS FOR 2007 - $5161.84

Please realize that this figure doesn’t take into account all the personal donations of money and time that our ladies give on a daily basis.  It truly is amazing.  Thank you to everyone who had a part in this great year of caring for and about those who need a helping hand.

One of the biggest reasons we are able to do so much good is our largest fundraiser - our merchandise pickle events.  I realize that is seems like we just finished our holiday pickle, but guess what?  Our St. Patrick’s Day merchandise pickle is just around the corner.  Mark your calendars - Saturday, March 15.  Come join in the fun and have a great Irish corned beef and cabbage dinner.  We will begin the pickle and start serving at 3:00 p.m. til ??

Please begin to bring in merchandise pickle items now.  Don’t wait til the last minute.  As always, we accept all new merchandise, gift certificates and cards, and services certificates. Did you receive a really nice Christmas gift that you’re just not quite sure what to do with? Perfect!!!  Donate it to our pickle!

We’re also planning a fun-filled Valentine’s Day/Roaring 20’s Party on February 15th, 6:00 p.m.  Come dressed in roaring 20’s attire and have a chance to win prizes for the best costumes.  Enjoy 20’s, 30’s and 40’s swing and big-band music and win prizes for the best dancers.  On top of all that have a SPECTACULAR Valentine’s dinner.  Our resident chef, Annie, has a wonderful menu planned:
* Shrimp Cocktail * Beef Tenderloin * Potato * Fresh Vegetable * Salad * Bread * Dessert * Complimentary Glass of Champagne

This great dinner and all the fun for just $16.00 per person.  Such a deal!!  Make sure you’re there.

I do need to apologize for the newsletter getting out late last month.  There was a communication problem, but we’ve got it all worked out.  Your newsletters won’t be late again - promise!  Ladies- remember that we get together to fold and prepare the newsletters on the 4th Sunday of each month - after Auxiliary breakfast, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Ok - hope you all enjoyed your drink.  This article is finally finished!  Thanks once again for everything you do and ... .see you at the Post!!

Squadron 11-11

The SAL had a very good year in 2007 and Squadron 11-11 received recognition at the National Meeting for achieving one of the highest recruitment goals in the country. The efforts of the SAL membership in holding Saturday night bingo and diners allowed the Squadron to raise enough money to make the following charitable contributions:

Child Welfare Fund * $750

Spinoza Bears * $750

Fisher House * $750

The Danny Veteran Fund * $250

Rose Terrace Nursing Home * $350

The Post 11-11 SAL is hosting the District 5 Child Welfare banquet on April 5, 2008. Happy hour is from 5-6pm, Diner from 6-7 pm and music and dancing after 7pm. Please join the party, as there is no cost for your attendance. Your support and contribution to this much needed charity is most welcomed.

COMEDY NIGHT AT POST 11-11

On January 10, 2008, entertainment was provided by that funny man Mr. Cameron “Joke Monkey” Stover who entertained a full house for 45 minutes. Laughs were had by all with his “R” rated show. Cameron is the son of Kevin and Marylyn Stover, members of Post 11-11. Cameron is presently attending the University of San Diego where he is enrolled in the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). Upon graduation he hopes to be the funniest officer in the United States Marine Corp, which begs the question, “Is any military officer funny”? Post 11-11 wishes Cameron success in his endeavors, and we hope to have him entertain us again.
